The Jim Crow Laws were the result of the southern white people’s reaction to the end of slavery. They were laws established between 1874 and the mid 1960’s that separated blacks and whites in the south. The term “Jim Crow” comes from a black character in an old song and was the name of a popular dance in the 1820’s. In 1928, a man named Thomas "Daddy" Rice started to develop a routine where he would black his face, put old clothing on and would sing and dance in imitation of an old decaying black man. The laws were strongly enforced and made it very hard for the blacks to live. White people did not believe that blacks deserved to be on the same level as they. One of the laws forbid black people to sit at the front of a bus; they had to sit in the back. One reason why these laws were established was that many Christian ministers believed the whites were the chosen ones. They believed the blacks were cursed to be slaves, and that G-d supported racial segregation. Many blacks wanted to travel North where these laws were not permitted. It was a very risky plan, but many of them decided to take the risk anyway. Though some were hurt, many of them made it to their destination and finally felt safe. Jim Crow laws were originally supported by the courts as a separate but equal treatment. However, over time the effects of the laws changed and completely cut off almost every privilege for blacks. They were forbidden to be in a public place with a white. White people, by law, were able to hang a black for doing something a white man thought was wrong--without a trial. As you can see the Jim Crow laws and other forms of segregation had a huge effect on blacks. White people discriminated against them simply because they were a different race. From the information I have presented in my report, I hope you were able to gather that discrimination is wrong and ruined the lives of many innocent people.
